These therefore stayclean and neat after use.They are made of a silvery metal at both ends that is either stainless steel or aluminum, with athick transparent acrylic center column which looks and feels like glass, but is shatterproof.Also, the bottom is a dense black rubber that gives it a firm slip-resistant base, and protectswhatever tabletop surface it rests upon.Originally, I purchase from Amazon, a far more expensive and very similar-looking salt & papergrinder set made by Cole & Mason. They brag that they have been making the finest grindersfor over a century in England... and I fell for it. When they arrived, the packaging revealed thatCole & Mason now proudly outsource all their manufacturing to China. Within just a few months,the grinder mechanism detached from the top, and no amount of super-glue could fix it.It's very sad to see a proud and ancient English company like Cole & Mason sell-out to China,and ruin their reputation by producing pretty, but low-grade, Chinese garbage at premium prices.These OXO grinders are a much better choice... and they also hold twice as much salt & pepperas the inferior, yet pricier, Cole & Mason grinders. I recommend that you go with OXO. I haveseveral other OXO brand products in my kitchen that I've had for many years, and they all stillwork, and they all still look brand-new. I checked the cap on the salt mill and it seems to be ok. The pepper mill still seems to grind ok, but since a prime motivation in my buying this Lua set rather than the regular OXO Good Grips Grinders (of which I already have 5 and never had a bit of trouble) was for the sleek look to display in a special place in my kitchen. Disappointed to say the least ...2/15 update: Realizing I would never be happy with the mill in the defective condition that it was, I did contact OXO customer support and sent them pictures. They asked for me to return the set and they would send another set. It took a while, but now I have a new set and so far, so good.7/15 update: I have upgraded my rating from 2 stars to 4 stars since the replacement mill has been holding up as it should and haven't had any further problems.3 Comments 28 people found this helpful. They grind salt and pepper with incredible ease, and I really enjoy using them in the kitchen.However, there is a fatal flaw: there is a cap where the OXO label is displayed. That cap came right off and fell right into my food while I was using the salt mill... and that was after using the mill for less than 1 week. (See the attached picture.)I bought this set simply due to its good looks (and I bet it's the main reason that the majority of purchasers even considered this product). Sadly, when the cap comes off, it's not so pretty to look at anymore. It also makes me question the durability of the rest of the mill.If you read other reviews, you'll see that this is not an isolated problem. They are great price compared to the ones that go up to 300 a pair. Very easy to fill, the top mills is great it means you wont have the particles wherever you place them after using them. Also another great feature is that you have 5 settings so it will set to very fine up to big ones. Hopefully, it will be my last!I have a lot of cheap mills throughout the kitchen, including an older OXO mill. After a couple weeks of use, those old grinders are ready to be retired. I had been considering the well reviewed Unicorn Magnum Pepper Mill 6' Black, but decided to give the OXO a try...OXO typically has impressed me with the quality of their kitchen products.I have not been disappointed. In short, there are several reasons to recommend this:1) Easy-to-adjust coarseness: a simple thumb-switch on the collar makes it easy to choose any of 5 levels of grind. The difference from one setting to the next is noticeable. By contrast, some of my old mills would release big chunks into a supposedly fine grind.2) Easy-to-fill: With some of my mills, the opening for the peppercorns was so small that I would end up spilling them everywhere. With this OXO mill, the opening is sufficiently wide enough to refill. (Side note: I was please that the mill arrived already filled with pepper!)3) Easy-to-use: Turn it upside down and twist. When I'm frantically cooking and need a quick dash of pepper, I don't want a pepper mill that slows me down.
